یک حکایت جالب!

THE ASS AND HIS PURCHASER

A man who wanted to buy an Ass went to market, and, coming across a likelylooking beast, arranged with the owner that he should be allowed to take him home on trial to see what he was like. When he reached home, he put him into his stable along with the other asses. The newcomer took a look round, and immediately went and chose a place next to the laziest and greediest beast in the stable.

When the master saw this he put a halter on him at once, and led him off and handed him over to his owner again. The latter was a good deal surprised to seem him back so soon, and said, “Why, do you mean to say you have tested him already?” “I don’t want to put him through any more tests,” replied the other. “I could see what sort of beast he is from the companion he chose for himself.” A man is known by the company he keeps.

"تنها" ، سروده ادگار آلن پو ، به سفارش یکی از دوستان :

ALONE

From childhood’s hour I have not been

As others were; I have not seen

As others saw; I could not bring

My passions from a common spring.

From the same source I have not taken

My sorrow; I could not awaken

My heart to joy at the same tone;

And all I loved, I loved alone.

Then- in my childhood, in the dawn

Of a most stormy life- was drawn

From every depth of good and ill

The mystery which binds me still:

From the torrent, or the fountain,

From the red cliff of the mountain,

From the sun that round me rolled

In its autumn tint of gold,

From the lightning in the sky

As it passed me flying by,

From the thunder and the storm,

And the cloud that took the form

(When the rest of Heaven was blue)

Of a demon in my view.

این هم شعری از  ویلیام بلیک شاعر و نویسنده انگلیسی :

DIVINE IMAGE

                       To Mercy, Pity, Peace, and Love

                       All pray in their distress;

                       And to these virtues of delight

                       Return their thankfulness.

                       For Mercy, Pity, Peace, and Love

                       Is God, our father dear,

                       And Mercy, Pity, Peace, and Love

                       Is Man, his child and care.

                       For Mercy has a human heart,

                       Pity a human face,

                       And Love, the human form divine,

                       And Peace, the human dress.

                       Then every man, of every clime

                       That prays in his distress,

                       Prays to the human form divine,

                       Love, Mercy, Pity, Peace. -

                       And all must love the human form,

                       In heathen, turk, or jew;

                       Where Mercy, Love & Pity dwell

                       There God is dwelling too.
